How to Level and Adjust Your Mower Deck Height
A level mower deck gives an even cut. Here's how to check and adjust yours.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkTape measure or ruler
- checkWrench set
- checkFlat, level surface (garage floor or driveway)
- checkTire pressure gauge
Park the mower on a flat, hard surface (concrete is ideal). Check and set all tires to the manufacturer's recommended pressure — uneven tire pressure causes uneven cutting.
Set the deck height to your preferred cutting height (typically 3-3.5 inches for most lawns).
Turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire(s). Rotate the blade so it points side-to-side (left to right).
Measure from the ground to the tip of the blade on each side. Both sides should be within 1/8 inch of each other. If not, adjust the deck leveling mechanism (usually adjustment nuts on the deck hanger brackets).
Rotate the blade so it points front-to-back. Measure both tips. The front should be 1/8 to 1/4 inch LOWER than the rear. This slight forward pitch improves cut quality.
Adjust the front-to-back pitch using the front hanger bracket or leveling rod (consult your manual for your specific model).
Recheck all measurements after adjustments. Tighten all hardware.
Reconnect the spark plug wire(s). Mow a test strip and inspect the cut quality — it should be even across the full width.
