How to Winterize a Push Mower for Storage
Complete winterization checklist to protect your push mower during off-season storage.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkFuel stabilizer
- checkFresh engine oil
- checkNew spark plug (optional)
- checkPutty knife or scraper
- checkWD-40 or silicone spray
- checkRags
Add fuel stabilizer to the tank following the product's mixing ratio. Run the engine for 5 minutes to circulate stabilized fuel through the entire system.
While the engine is still warm, drain the old oil and replace with fresh oil. Warm oil drains more completely.
Remove and inspect the spark plug. Replace if worn, or clean and re-gap if it's in good shape.
Remove the air filter. Replace paper filters; wash and re-oil foam filters.
Tip the mower on its side (air filter UP) and scrape all caked grass from under the deck with a putty knife.
Spray the clean deck underside with WD-40 or silicone spray to prevent rust and reduce grass buildup next season.
Inspect the blade. Sharpen if dull, replace if damaged. Now is the best time since you don't need the mower.
Wipe down the exterior. Touch up any paint chips with spray paint to prevent rust.
Store in a dry, covered location. Never store with an open fuel tank in an enclosed, unventilated space.
