How to Replace and Maintain a Riding Mower Battery

Safely replace your riding mower battery and learn maintenance tips to extend battery life.

handyman Tools & Materials Needed

  • checkWrench set (usually 5/16" or 3/8")
  • checkWire brush or terminal cleaner
  • checkNew battery (matching group size and CCA)
  • checkDielectric grease
  • checkSafety glasses
1

Turn off the mower and remove the key. Locate the battery — usually under the seat or hood.

2

Disconnect the NEGATIVE (black, minus) cable first. This prevents short circuits. Loosen the terminal clamp and pull it off.

3

Disconnect the POSITIVE (red, plus) cable second.

4

Remove any hold-down bracket or strap securing the battery. Lift the old battery out — they're heavy (15-25 lbs).

5

Clean the cable terminals and clamps with a wire brush. Remove all corrosion (white or green buildup).

6

Place the new battery in the tray with terminals in the correct orientation. Secure with the hold-down bracket.

7

Connect the POSITIVE (red) cable first. Tighten the clamp snugly but don't overtighten.

8

Connect the NEGATIVE (black) cable second. Tighten snugly.

9

Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease or petroleum jelly to both terminals to prevent future corrosion.

10

Test: turn the key and verify the engine cranks and starts normally.
