How to Clean or Replace a String Trimmer Air Filter
Keep your trimmer running strong by maintaining the air filter — especially important in dusty conditions.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkReplacement filter or soap/water for foam type
- checkScrewdriver (if needed for cover)
Turn off the trimmer and let it cool. Disconnect the spark plug wire on gas models.
Locate the air filter cover — usually on the side or back of the engine, held by a screw or snap clip.
Remove the cover and pull out the filter element.
For foam filters: wash in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and squeeze (don't wring) until dry. Apply a few drops of 2-stroke oil and squeeze to distribute evenly.
For paper or felt filters: tap gently to remove loose debris. If visibly dirty or clogged, replace — these can't be washed effectively.
Inspect the filter housing for debris. Clean it out before installing the filter.
Install the clean or new filter and replace the cover. Make sure it's sealed — any air gap lets dirt into the engine.
In dusty conditions (dirt, mulch, dry leaves), check the air filter every 5-10 hours of use. In normal conditions, every 25 hours.
