How to Replace a String Trimmer Spark Plug
A quick spark plug replacement can fix hard starting and poor performance in your string trimmer.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkSpark plug socket (usually 3/4" or 13/16")
- checkGap tool
- checkNew spark plug (typically NGK BPMR7A or Champion RCJ6Y)
1
Let the engine cool completely.
2
Pull the spark plug boot off the plug. Clean around the base to prevent debris from falling into the cylinder.
3
Remove the old plug with a spark plug socket. Turn counterclockwise.
4
Check the gap on the new plug — most 2-stroke trimmers call for 0.025 inches. Adjust if needed.
5
Thread the new plug in by hand. Tighten with the socket — about 1/4 turn past finger tight.
6
Push the boot firmly onto the new plug.
7
Pull the starter cord and verify the engine starts easier than before.
