How to Replace the Air Filter on a Push Mower
Quick guide to inspecting and replacing your push mower's air filter for better engine performance.
handyman Tools & Materials Needed
- checkScrewdriver (if needed for cover)
- checkReplacement air filter
- checkSoap and water (for foam filters)
Locate the air filter housing — a plastic cover on the side of the engine, usually held by a screw, clip, or knob.
Remove the cover and pull out the air filter. Note how it sits so you can install the new one the same way.
Inspect the filter. Paper filters: hold it up to light. If you can't see light through it, replace it. Foam filters: if it's deteriorated, stiff, or won't come clean, replace it.
For reusable foam filters: wash in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, squeeze dry (don't wring), and apply a light coat of clean engine oil. Squeeze out excess oil.
For paper filters: install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one. Make sure it seats properly in the housing.
If your mower has a foam pre-filter over a paper filter, clean or replace the foam element and install it over the paper filter.
Replace the cover and secure it. Make sure the housing is sealed — any gaps let unfiltered air into the engine.
