How to Change the Oil in a Push Mower

Step-by-step guide to draining and replacing oil in your walk-behind lawn mower.

1

Run the engine for 2-3 minutes to warm the oil. Warm oil drains more completely and carries out more contaminants.

2

Turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire for safety. Never work on a mower with the spark plug connected.

3

Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom or side of the engine. Some push mowers don't have a drain plug — you'll tip the mower to drain through the fill tube instead.

4

If tipping: place your drain pan next to the mower and tip it toward the drain pan with the air filter side UP. Oil will pour out of the fill tube. If using a drain plug: place the pan underneath and remove the plug with a socket wrench.

5

Let all the old oil drain completely. Gently rock the mower to get the last bit out. This should take 2-3 minutes.

6

Replace the drain plug (if applicable) and set the mower upright on a flat surface.

7

Using a funnel, slowly add fresh oil. Most push mowers take 15-20 ounces. Add a little at a time and check the dipstick frequently.

8

Check the dipstick — oil should be between the two marks. Don't overfill. Wipe up any spills.

9

Reconnect the spark plug wire. Start the engine and let it run for 30 seconds, then shut off and recheck the oil level.

10

Dispose of used oil properly — most auto parts stores accept used oil for free recycling.
