The Complete End-of-Season Tune-Up Checklist

Everything that should be done before you put your mower away for the winter, in one comprehensive checklist.

An end-of-season tune-up combines regular maintenance with winterization prep. Here's our complete checklist — the same one we follow when you bring your mower in for service.

Engine Maintenance: change the engine oil and oil filter (riding mowers), replace the spark plug, clean or replace the air filter and pre-filter, inspect and clean the fuel system, and add fuel stabilizer and run the engine for 5 minutes.

Fuel System: drain old fuel or treat with stabilizer, inspect fuel lines for cracks or deterioration, replace the fuel filter (riding mowers), and check for any fuel leaks.

Blade and Deck: remove and sharpen (or replace) the blade, scrape the mower deck clean of grass buildup, inspect the blade adapter and mounting hardware, check the deck for cracks or damage, and spray the deck with a protectant.

Drive System (Riding Mowers): check drive belt condition and tension, inspect idler pulleys and springs, check tire pressure and condition, and lubricate all grease fittings.

Electrical (Riding Mowers): test the battery and charge or replace as needed, clean battery terminals and apply dielectric grease, test safety switches (seat, blade engage, brake), and check all lights if equipped.

Exterior: clean the entire machine, touch up any paint chips to prevent rust, lubricate all pivot points and cables, and check all fasteners for tightness.

This might look like a lot, but each item only takes a few minutes. The whole process takes about an hour for a push mower and 2-3 hours for a riding mower. Or save yourself the time and bring it to Cherrone Equipment Service — we'll handle the entire checklist and have it stored-ready.
